First Month Down: More Than Just an App

It's been a wild ride since ProtoQuiz officially launched. Launching an app that aims to revolutionize protocol study is no easy feat, especially when dealing with the complexities of PDF parsing and algorithm extraction. From day one, we've been laser-focused on solving a problem many of you face: effectively learning and retaining your local EMS protocols, not just generic NREMT material.

The Technical Hurdles: PDF Parsing and Protocol Interpretation

The core of ProtoQuiz is its ability to ingest a PDF protocol and extract meaningful data. This is where things get complex. PDFs are notorious for their inconsistent formatting. One county might use tables, another uses bullet points, and yet another relies on free-flowing text. Our algorithms have to be flexible enough to handle these variations and accurately identify medications, dosages, algorithms, and other key elements.

Challenge: Initial uploads had an upload success rate around 50%. Meaning, half the PDFs either failed or didn't have all the information correctly parsed.

Solution: We've been iterating rapidly, improving our parsing engine with each new upload. We analyze failed uploads, identify patterns, and refine our algorithms to handle increasingly complex documents. While we are still working to improve, we're confident in saying that our upload success rate is trending up.

Quizzes, Scenarios, and Algorithm Mastery

Extracting data is only half the battle. ProtoQuiz then uses this information to generate quizzes, create realistic patient scenarios, and build algorithm tests. This goes beyond rote memorization; it forces you to apply your knowledge in dynamic, simulated situations.

So far, ProtoQuiz users have generated over 2500 quizzes and completed 600+ scenarios. Even more impressive is the completion of 100+ algorithm quizzes. This highlights the demand for a tool that directly tests protocol knowledge.
