Update, Sept 2026: ProtoQuiz no longer shows ads. The free tier now includes 3 per day of each generated feature.
Back in June, at the end of the NREMT prep announcement, I teased a way to stay current on the medicine behind what we do on the truck. Not the protocol steps: the reason for them, the pathophysiology and the evidence underneath.
Medicine Mode is live in ProtoQuiz, in beta. It's the textbook you never got around to reading: plain language, cited to real medical literature, as deep as you want to go, and unlike a textbook, it doesn't go stale.
Why It Exists
For most of us the classroom was years ago, and medicine kept moving. Protocols tell you what to do. Medicine Mode is about why. That's the difference between following a checklist and practicing medicine.
What's In It
742 topics at launch, covering what you actually see on the truck: cardiac, respiratory, toxicology, trauma, neuro, OB, environmental, psych and more. Each one is a full narrative, not a flashcard:
- Pathophysiology in plain language, the way a good instructor explains it.
- The evidence behind the treatment, with over 4,400 citations to current literature across the library.
- 800+ images and diagrams - ECGs, anatomy, mechanisms.
- A built-in glossary. Tap any term for the definition without losing your spot.
- A case vignette on every topic that makes you commit to an answer before you read.
Built to Rabbit-Hole
Every topic is layered. Stay at the quick answer, or keep peeling: why we treat it this way, what's actually killing the patient, what the research says. And it doesn't stop at handoff. Medicine Mode follows the case into the hospital - the ER, the ICU course, how it tends to turn out - so you finally see the second half of the story.
Medicine Mode, By the Numbers
742 topics across cardiac, respiratory, tox, trauma, neuro, OB, and more
4,400+ citations to real, current medical literature
800+ images and diagrams
Every term tappable - a full glossary built into the text
A Living Textbook
This library grows in waves, and when the evidence behind a treatment shifts, the topic gets revised. Every topic also has a feedback bar: if something doesn't land or reads wrong, or there's a topic you want, tell me there. That shapes what gets written next.
I've looked across EMS, nursing and physician education and haven't found anything like it. Prep apps quiz and stop, textbooks are frozen, and the references that stay current are bedside lookup tools, not teachers.
The Fine Print
It's a beta. The feedback bar on every topic is how it keeps getting better.
Your local protocol always wins. Medicine Mode teaches the why behind the medicine. It is not medical direction and never overrides your agency or your medical director.
Go Get Lost In It
Open ProtoQuiz and tap the Medicine card, the one with the beta pill. Start with a call that didn't sit right with you and read that patient's full story, pathophysiology to ICU. Then hit the feedback bar and tell me if it lands.
